a week-long immersion course for intermediate and advanced learners in spoken Yiddish learning about contemporary Hasidic culture
Our Contemporary Spoken Yiddish immersion course will be all in Yiddish. It is necessary that you speak Yiddish at least an intermediate level and that you are interested in improving your spoken and listening skills. There is less of a focus on reading and writing skills. For this reason we include the information, for now, all in English. But a Spoken Yiddish and Hebrew version is in the pipeline.
We will spend mornings together in the library with a YIddish native speaker, doing volunteering workin the library. You can also have private study time exploring the books in the collection. Coffee/tea and light food will be available all day.
Mendy Cahan will teach the group for three hours every afternoon about historical and current varieties of Yiddish and contemporary Hasidic Yiddish culture. UCL can provide a certificate of attendance for university students, if required.
In the evenings, there will be public lectures, concerts, cabarets and other performances at YUNG YiDiSH, even a Hasidic badkhen! Your attendance is complimentary; a friend travelling with you can attend the events at a reduced rate.
We will travel to the Meron for an overnight trip to take part in the so-called Hasidic Burning Man, where hundreds of thousands of Haredi people gather at LagBeOmer to sing, dance and celebrate together throughout the night.
We will mark the incoming of the shabes, and have no formal teaching on the day of the shabes. But we will gather for shalesides at YUNG YiDiSH and close our week together with making havdule and a throw a good-bye party on motse shabes.
Tel Aviv has everything to offer from perfect weather, to great cafes and bars, souks and of course, the Mediterranean...
